The ultimate country house hotel

Gidleigh Park, Chagford, England

This magnificent country house dates from 1928 and was the private residence of an Australian shipping baron. The estate was converted to a hotel in the 70′s and began its tradition of hospitality on the highest level. Surrounding the house are the wilds of Dartmoor, lending a contrast between untamed and civilized landscapes.

Enlarged in 2006 to 24 guest rooms and featuring a complete renovation, the decor is inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement that flourished around the time the manse was built.

Guests will enjoy the warmth and comfort of fine wood paneling, richly textured drapes and upholstery and comfy easy chairs and sofas. The verdant views and manicured lawns provide a calming backdrop. The one-of-a-kind flavor of the rooms are complimented by all modern technological conveniences including WiFi and HD flat screen TVs. Bathrooms are marble and graced with Occitane toiletries.

A highlight of a visit to Gidleigh Park is dining at the hotel’s Michelin 2-star restaurant. The gourmet meals and extensive wine list bring the Gidleigh Park restaurant into the upper tiers of haute cuisine. The blend of modern and classic European cuisine has brought Gidleigh Park countless awards.

Activities on-site include hiking, lawn games, jogging and tennis. Guided walks of the wild and thrilling moor are available. A tour of the 45-acres grounds and gardens of Gidleigh Park can also be arranged. And, of course, breathing the fresh country air is available everywhere.

The Dylan • Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam’s exquisite Hempel-designed boutique hotel

The Dylan Amsterdam - Exterior

Click on photo for more information & booking.

The Dylan Amsterdam is located in a quaint 17th-century townhouse at Keizergracht Canal, but the interior, designed by Anouska Hempel, is a sophisticated modernist fantasy, blending both European and Oriental touches. Bold color schemes, Asian-inspired furniture and elegant potted orchids make the 41 guest rooms individual and memorable. Four-poster beds, exposed beams and floor-to-ceiling drapes as well as the most up-to-date digital amenities grace most rooms.

The Dylan Amsterdam - Lobby

The Bakery Restaurant is an ancient bakery retaining its original ovens and exposed brick. The cuisine is international with Asian, French and Italian notes. In summer, the restaurant extends into the garden, a tree-lined haven. The Chinese Room is an avante-garde lounge which serves drinks well into the night.

And in one of the most unusual amenities offered by deluxe hotels, the hotel offers bicycles for guests’ use in getting to nearby museums, cafes and shopping districts.

The Dylan Amsterdam - Guest room

The Dylan Amsterdam
Location: Keizersgracht 384, Amsterdam, Netherlands 1016 GB; Schiphol Airport is 25 minutes by car; 41 guestrooms.

Luxury style: There is a trend of Asian/Zen inspired boutique hotel design that has run rampant lately, but the Dylan Amsterdam goes one step beyond the usual. The interesting touches that harken back to the Dutch colonial past gives this iteration of the style an authenticity that is sometimes lacking in the genre.

What we’ve heard: The Dylan, besides its five-star credentials, also has an enviable location for sightseeing; it’s a stone’s throw from the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, and the Van Gogh museum.
